As part of an ongoing effort to reach out to diverse groups and encourage high school students’ interest and future participation in the justice system, the Los Angeles Superior Court is hosting a Young Women’s Leadership Power Lunch for students from McAlister High School on Wednesday, May 11, 2016, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Plasencia Elementary School, located at 1321 Cortez St., Los Angeles 90026. (Note: McAlister High School is located on the campus of Plasencia Elementary School.)
The Power Lunch Program provides civic education, judicial mentorship, and exposure to the judicial branch for local high school students. At the lunches, the students hear presentations about the Constitution and the legal system. The students break into smaller groups for personal interactions with the participating judges and lawyers.
McAlister High School, part of the Los Angeles Unified School District, is an alternative continuous enrollment school for pregnant and/or parenting teens. This unique power lunch session will feature speakers who have raised children on their own while pursuing their educations or their careers emphasizing the life experiences they have in common with the young attendees.
The invitation-only event is co-sponsored by the Los Angeles Superior Court and the Women Lawyers Association of Los Angeles. LASC Commissioner Nancy Ramirez will act as the event moderator and anticipated panelists include: Magistrate Judge Karen Stevenson, United States District Court, Central District of California; and Judge Michelle Ahnn and Judge Deborah Sanchez of Los Angeles Superior Court. Judge Jacqueline Nguyen, United States Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit, will provide closing remarks.
