New and Amended Local Rules Effective June 1, 2023

Just in case you missed our posting last month, here is a friendly reminder.

The new and amended local rules listed below will become effective June 1, 2023. A redlined version of these rules, as well as a complete copy of the Local Civil Rules that will be effective June 1, 2023, are available on the Court’s website and accompany the electronic version of this Notice.

Local Civil Rules:

  • L.R. 56-1
  • L.R. 56-2
  • New L.R. 56-3
  • Former L.R. 56-3, renumbered to L.R. 56-4
  • L.R. 83-2.1.4.2

All proceedings in cases commenced on or after June 1, 2023, and, insofar as just and practicable, all proceedings then pending will be governed by these amended rules.

Notice of Proposed Modifications to Civil and Criminal Local Rules

The Judges of the United States District Court, Northern District of California, have approved proposed substantive modifications to the Civil Local Rules (L.R.s) listed below.  See Summary of Proposed Revisions and Invitation for Public Comment.  Pursuant to Civil L.R. 83-2(b), public comments on the proposed modifications may be submitted to media@cand.uscourts.gov until Monday, July 10, 2023, at 4:00 p.m. PDT.

Southern District of California

General Order No. 203-P: Duties and Power of United States Magistrate Judges Regarding Misdemeanor and Petty Offenses: Forfeiture and Collateral

Good cause appearing, IT IS ORDERED that the Central Violations Bureau Service Center will issue location codes to the United States Border Patrol, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and Federal Protective Services, so that any citations validly issued by these agencies may be prosecuted in this Court.
