Beginning Legal Secretarial Training Online Course Commencing August 2, 2022

LPI will be offering its Beginning Legal Secretarial Training Course online. This course will be an eight week, work-at-your-own-pace online session commencing August 2, 2022 and ending September 27, 2022. During the course, the following topics will be covered:
- Introduction to the Law Office
- Duties of the Legal Secretary
- Effective Telephone Skills
- Effective Oral Communication Skills
- Effective Written Communication Skills
- Calendaring and Timetables
- Basic Grammar Skills
- Transcription and Proofreading Techniques
- Court Structure
- Citations
- Service of Legal Documents
- Preparing a Proper Caption
- Preparation of Documents Filed with the Court
- Basics of Civil Litigation
- Demand for Production of Documents
- Request for Admissions
- Depositions/Deposition Subpoenas
- Demand for Physical Examinations
- Discovery Timelines. Service and Verifications
Classes will take place online utilizing video lectures, discussion boards, email, whiteboard sessions, chat rooms, and quizzes. Login information will be provided upon enrollment in the course.
The cost of the training course, which includes the Legal Secretary’s Reference Guide, is $180 for LPI members/$250 for non-LPI members. Each individual must register separately. Upon completion of the course, students will receive a certificate from LPI.
Overview of California Discovery Online Class Commencing August 2, 2022

LPI will be offering an online course on an Overview of California State Court Discovery. This course will be a six-week, work-at-your-own-pace online sessions running August 2, 2022 – September 13, 2022. During the classes, the following topics will be covered:
- Interrogatories
- Demand for Production of Documents
- Requests for Admissions
- Depositions
- Demand for Physical Examinations
- Deposition Subpoenas
- Discovery Timelines and Service
- Verifications
Classes will take place online utilizing video lectures, discussion boards, email, whiteboard sessions, chat rooms, and quizzes. Login information will be provided upon enrollment in the class.
The content of this course is designed for legal secretaries and those studying for the California Certified Legal Secretary examination.
The cost of the class is $125 for LPI members/$175 for non-LPI members. Each individual must register separately. Upon completion of the class, students will receive a certificate of completion from LPI.

This informative webinar will include electronic filings on the Case Management/Electronic Case Files (CM/ECF) system, judges’ procedures, latest changes to local rules, and other court news.
Nancy Hackney began her career with the federal court 21 years ago as a docket clerk and has worked in various capacities in the Clerk’s Office. She was selected as a Courtroom Clerk to Magistrate Judges for several years and eventually became the CM/ECF trainer for the court. In addition to providing CM/ECF training to court staff, she worked with the CM/ECF Helpdesk Team to maintain the court’s e-filing system and manage the day-to-day operations of the CM/ECF E-filing Helpdesk. Before she joined federal court, Nancy also worked in the state court’s civil division in Los Angeles for ten years. Please join her at this informative webinar to learn tips on electronic filings and keep up to date with other federal court news.
