The Bluebook LPI – Tip Number Two

Parentheticals are fantastic. They function incredibly to relay information. But take note of your punctuation. Is there a full sentence inside the parens; if so a period is needed inside the parens to end a sentence and then another period outside to end the whole sentence.  Getting this punctuation wrong will distract from the writing.

The Defendants cite, Yi Qiao v. Chan, No. C20-1821-RSM, 2020 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 241989, at *12 (W.D. Wash. Dec. 23, 2020) (“A plaintiff losing her ability to recover a money judgment constitutes irreparable harm warranting temporary injunctive relief.”).

The Defendants cite, Yi Yi Qiao v. Chan, No. C20-1821-RSM, 2020 U.S. Dist. LEXIS 241989, at *12 (W.D. Wash. Dec. 23, 2020) (“ability to recover a money judgment constitutes irreparable harm warranting temporary injunctive relief”).
