Earth Day: “Planet vs. Plastics”

The theme for Earth Day 2024 is Planet vs. Plastics, which calls for advocating for widespread awareness of the health risks of plastics. The organizer of Earth Day has announced its commitment to a 60% reduction in plastic production by 2040. It is the goal of earthday.org to raise awareness about plastic’s harm to human and biodiversity health and increase research transparency. With only 16% of plastics and plastic packaging being recycled, the majority finds its way to landfills, and incineration sites, and ends up in our rivers and oceans.

The campaign #PlasticsDetoxChallenge promotes the reduction of single-use items to inspire a wider shift towards a plastic-free lifestyle. Consider participating in a march or rally, a community cleanup, or one of the below long-term solutions.

Swap out Your Kitchen and Household Products for “If You Care” products that are biodegradable and do not use chemicals or plastic. They are 100% recycled, chemical-free, and include vegetable-based inks.

Plant a Tree that can capture carbon, cool overheated places benefit agriculture, support pollinators, reduce the risk of disease transmission, and boost local economies. One oak tree brings in more insects and bird species than an entire yard of plants.

Use Wildflowers and Native Plants which can attract native and beneficial insects that improve both pest control and pollination.

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle in the Garden by returning old plastic pots and trays or buy biodegradable pots that you plant directly into the ground.

Stop Pesticides and Chemicals in the Garden by using organic soil amendments to turn your poor garden soil into a nutrient-rich paradise in which plants can thrive.
