Dressing for Success – More Than Just Clothes Submitted by Mike Lewis, CCLS

“To me, clothing is a form of self-expression — there are hints about who you are in what you wear.” – Marc Jacobs

We’ve all heard the phrase “dress for the job you want, not the job you have.” While it may sound like a cliché, there is a lot of truth behind it, especially in the legal profession, where first impressions, credibility, and professionalism matter every day.

Recently, I had the opportunity to present a program with my esteemed colleague, Jasmine Powers, on Dressing for Success Without Breaking the Bank for the San Francisco Legal Professionals Association. One of the themes that resonated with attendees most was that professional dress is not about expensive wardrobes or designer labels. It is about presenting yourself purposefully as someone who is competent, confident, and ready for greater responsibility.

Your Appearance Is Part of Your Professional Brand

Before you utter a single word, people likely have already formed an impression of you based on your appearance. As expressed by Marc Jacobs, you tell the world a lot about you in the way you dress. Put in a more relevant arena for all of us associated with LPI, attorneys, clients, law firm management, opposing counsel, recruiters, and colleagues all make subconscious assessments about your professionalism, attention to detail, and credibility.

Just as we strive to produce work product at the highest level, our personal presentation should reflect the same level of care.

Professional attire communicates:

  • Respect for clients and colleagues.
  • Confidence and competence.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Readiness for leadership opportunities.

In many ways, your appearance really is an extension of your work product.

You Don’t Have to Spend a Fortune

A common misconception is that dressing professionally requires a lot of money. It doesn’t.

During our presentation, we demonstrated how a small collection of quality basics can create dozens of different professional outfits simply by mixing and matching jackets, trousers, skirts, shirts, blouses, ties, shoes, and accessories.  These basics came from my favorite outlets and discount retailers such as Ross, Marshalls, TJ Maxx, and even the local thrift stores.

Consider investing in timeless, versatile pieces in colors that coordinate easily. Navy, charcoal, black, white, gray, and beige never go out of style and can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. To make things a little more interesting, I even add in a pop of color such as pink and purple but still maintain a professional look.

Quality, fit, colors, and condition are much more important than the price tag.

Know Your Workplace Culture

“Dressing for success” does not mean wearing a suit every day. Every workplace, every profession, every region and city has its own culture. Some firms maintain traditional business attire, while others have adopted business casual or hybrid dress expectations. Many might say workplaces in California may be a bit more relaxed than New York City.  Dressing for success comes from understanding your organization’s culture and location while presenting the most polished version of yourself within those expectations.

When in doubt, it is generally better to be slightly overdressed than underdressed.

Dress for the Opportunity

One piece of advice I often share is to think ahead.

If today unexpectedly became the day you met your firm’s managing partner for an important conversation, an important client, a recruiter, or a judge, would your appearance help reinforce the professional reputation you’ve worked so hard to build?

Many career opportunities arise without advance notice. Being consistently well-attired means you’re always prepared for them.

Small Details Matter

Professional appearance extends beyond clothing.  Consider the complete picture:

  • Clothing that fits well, is clean and is wrinkle-free.
  • Clean, polished shoes.
  • Well-groomed hair.
  • Appropriate fragrances – or none.
  • Professional and complimentary accessories.
  • Professional bags, portfolios, or briefcases.

Collectively, these seemingly small details demonstrate pride in your appearance and respect for those around you.

Confidence Is the Best Accessory

Perhaps the greatest benefit of dressing professionally is the confidence it inspires.

When people feel confident about their appearance, they often communicate more effectively, participate more comfortably in meetings, and project greater executive presence. Confidence influences posture, eye contact, and interactions with others.

Your goal is not perfection. It is presenting yourself in a manner that allows your skills and professionalism to shine.

Final Thoughts

The legal profession has evolved over the years, and workplace attire has become much more flexible than it once was. Nevertheless, professionalism never goes out of style.

Dressing for success isn’t about impressing others with expensive clothing labels…it’s about demonstrating respect for yourself, your profession, your clients, and the opportunities you hope to achieve.

Your wardrobe is one of the few aspects of your professional image that you have complete control over. Make it work for you.

After all, while your abilities may earn you the job, your professional presence often helps open the door.
