VENTURA – JUDGE DEREK D. MALAN TAKES THE BENCH

Derek D. Malan took the bench on Monday as Ventura County’s newest Superior Court judge. He fills the vacancy created by the retirement of Judge Glen M. Reiser. Judge Malan was elected to the position in the June 5, 2018 primary election, with the term of office taking effect January 7, 2019.

Judge Malan has been a Commissioner with the Ventura Superior Court since August 2016, presiding over family law, civil, probate, truancy, and criminal cases.

Previously, he served as a Senior Deputy District Attorney with the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office from 2007 to 2016, and as a Deputy District Attorney with the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office from 2000 to 2007.

His assignments in the District Attorney’s Office included the Major Crimes Unit – Narcotics, Serious and Violent Felony Unit, Sexual Assault/Family Protection Unit, Major Crimes Unit – Gang Violence Suppression, Ventura County Auto Theft Task Force, and General Felony/Misdemeanor Trial Unit.

Judge Malan is a graduate of the University of Washington and earned his law degree from the Pepperdine University School of Law.

Judge Malan is currently assigned to Courtroom 26 hearing criminal trials.

The date of his formal installation ceremony will be announced in the near future.
