SANTA CLARA – JUROR APPRECIATION WEEK

Court honors Santa Clara County jurors for their contribution to the pursuit of justice.

The Superior Court of California, County of Santa Clara will celebrate Juror Appreciation Week from May 8 – 12, 2017. To recognize the service and participation of jurors from our community, the Court is providing pastries in the Jury Assembly Rooms, as well as distributing certificates of appreciation signed by Presiding Judge Patricia M. Lucas and Chief Justice Tani Cantil-Sakauye.

“Jury duty is a right and a responsibility, and is one of the most important civic duties one can perform,” said Presiding Judge Lucas. “It is the cornerstone of our justice system that ensures the protection of rights and liberties. We deeply appreciate the sacrifices and contributions jurors make to our justice system.”

Celebrated by Superior Courts throughout California, the second full week in May was established in 1998 by the California Legislature to acknowledge the important contributions of citizens who devote their time in “making the cherished right of trial by jury a reality.”

Annually, millions of Californians statewide participate in jury service:

• Approximately 9 million people are summoned to jury service;
• Over 3.5 million prospective jurors are eligible and available to serve; and
• Approximately 80 percent of prospective jurors complete service in one day.

Even California Chief Justice Tani G. Cantil-Sakauye was called and reported for jury service on March 23 of last year.
