After serving as a state judge in Ohio for two years, President Benjamin Harrison appointed William Howard Taft to serve as the Solicitor General of the United States in 1890 and then in 1892 as a judge for the U. S. Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. In 1900, President William McKinley asked Taft to resign from the bench to become governor of the Philippines. President Theodore Roosevelt recruited him for his cabinet appointing him secretary of war. In 1908, Taft was elected President of the United States. As President, Taft appointed six Justices to the Supreme Court. After leaving the White House, Taft taught constitutional law at Yale University and during World War I served on the National War Labor Board. President Warren G. Harding nominated Taft as Chief Justice of the United States on June 30, 1921.
